HeightSensor

Tow Mate

Predict a blow out before it happens with Tow Mate Wheel Watch.

Tow Mate is a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System with a difference. Height sensors mounted on the axle detect any change tyre inflation and alert you with a buzzer before it’s too late.

Just connect the 7 pin trailer plug to the trailing vehicle to activate.

Tow Mate also comes with an optional heat sensor module. This warns you of abnormal heat and activates the buzzer.

Main Features

  • Durable Height Sensors. Made from galvanized spring steel will take a terrible pounding. Will bend 90 degrees in all directions
  • No over-sensitive micro switches to cause annoying false alarms.
  • Discriminator recognises temporary tripping over obstacles and does not sound
  • Hitch to any vehicle. Firstly install the standard Wheel Watch System to any type of trailing vehicle then hitch to any towing vehicle without modification. Connecting the normal 7 pin trailer plug automatically activates the system and the buzzer is placed in any towing vehicle through the tailgate or boot lid.

Towing Hazards

Under inflated TYRES on caravan or trailer

Leaking valves, damaged to rims and punctures can happen without warning. These flex which generates extreme heat and if left un-noticed, results in a high speed blow-out. Sudden braking with uneven tyres can also cause a vehicle to skid or sway reducing the braking effect and creating a dangerous uncontrolled steering situation.

Powerful vehicles with air conditioning and audio systems are reasons why caravans are sometimes towed for several kilometres running on the rim with a shredded tyre.

The tread from shredded tyres can wreck the side panels or smash up through the wheel-arch causing extensive damage.

Its usually a passing motorist who lets you know that your tyre is missing or that smoke is coming out of the wheel. Sometimes there’s no passing motorist and the results can be disastrous.

Overheating Bearings

Extreme heat is generated.

Eventually the grease ignites and the whole wheel bursts into flames. The bearing may seize causing the hub and wheel to come off and can ruin the stub axle, cause a capsisal or even worse, fatalities.

Overheating Brakes

Controllers in the towing vehicle can be difficult to adjust and can cause the brake shoes to drag on the drum creating excessive heat which leads to brake fade rendering the brakes totally ineffective. It is also very easy to be distracted when hitching up and leave the park brake engaged.Excessive heat in brakes will also ruin the brake components and may even cause the wheel to ignite.

Uneven Braking

In an emergency disconnected electric brake wires can cause a caravan or trailer to skid or sway reducing the braking effect and creating a dangerous uncontrolled steering situation. The wires are very vulnerable because of continual exposure to flying stones and other objects. Also excessive axle movement can cause the connectors to dislodge. This can happen any time and normally goes un-noticed until it’s too late.

Some systems such as the Tekonsha Prodigy will detect failure in the entire circuit only. It will not warn if only one brake has lost connection. It is this condition that causes a dangerous uncontrolled steering situation.

How it Works

A buzzer in the towing vehicle activates when height sensors mounted on the axle detect partly deflated tyres, usually before any damage.

Exclusive Features and Benefits

  • Hitch to any Vehicle. Firstly install the standard Wheel Watch System to any type of trailing vehicle then hitch to any towing vehicle without modification. Connecting the normal 7 pin trailer plug automatically activates the system. The buzzer is placed in any towing vehicle through the tailgate or boot lid.
  • Durable Height Sensors. Made from galvanized spring steel will take a terrible pounding. Will bend 90 degrees in all directions
  • No over-sensitive micro switches to cause annoying false alarms.
  • Discriminator recognises temporary tripping over obstacles and does not sound. Click to view audio visual demo.

Optional Heat Sensor Module

These warn of abnormal heat by also activating the buzzer. The sensors are attached to the axle next to the bearings. The same sensor monitors the brakes and automatically resets when temperature is back to normal.

Optional Dash Mounted Warning Lights

  • For those hard of hearing – Red Flasher activates with buzzer.
  • May prevent other accidents – Green pilot light confirms the 7 pin plug is connected properly for the operation of Brakes, Tail Lights and Indicators. Also electrical supply is Okay to caravan accessories such as fridge as well as Wheel Watch.

Optional Brake Circuit Module

This warns the driver from the drivers seat if any individual brake has been disconnected rendering it inoperative. Mounted on the front of the caravan and viewed through the towing mirror.

  • Check the brake circuit on the trailing vehicle at any time. Simply view the monitor through the towing mirror when brakes are applied. Each brake is connected to a very powerful light (4,000 mcd) on the monitor.
  • Lights for active brakes will be illuminated. Any with either the power or earth cable disconnected will not.
  • Identifies the offending brake simplifying rectification.
  • No lights indicate 7 pin plug loose or removed or fault with the brake controller in the towing vehicle.

Installation

Installation is Simple and can be carried out by any competent handy person. Detailed instructions are supplied with the system. No interference to towing vehicle electrics.

Wheel Watch

  1. Connect 2 wires into power and earth terminals of the existing trailer 7 pin plug.
  2. Clamp the Height sensors onto the axle
  3. Connect the signal circuit to the sensors

Heat Sensor Attachment

  1. Secure heat sensors on axle near each bearing.
  2. Cover with suitable silicone sealer to protect from stone damage, waterproof and lock in position.

Brake Circuit Module

  1. Mount the Monitor at the front of the caravan or trailer and run the wires down through the J-mould so they are not visible.
  2. Connect the wires from the monitor to the wires from each brake drum with the splicers supplied.
  3. Cable ties are supplied to make the cables secure.
